General Information about Kanyakumari District

Kanyakumari district is the southern district of Tamil Nadu state and mainland India. It is the second largest district in the state in terms of population density and the second highest urbanization is ahead of Chennai district. The district is the first in the state in terms of literacy rate. District Headquarters is Nagercoil

In Kanyakumari district, there is a diverse topography along the sea on three sides and the mountains of the Western Ghats have a boundary in the north direction. Geologically, the area of the district is very small compared to the rest of the district – during the Miocene, 2.5 million years as defective, after which many crimes, as well as the regression of the sea, shaped the west coast of the district.




Historically, Nanjinad and Ida Nadu, which were present in the present Kanyakumari district, were ruled by various Tamil and Malayalam dynasties: Venadad Kingdom, Pandian, Charus, Chola, S, and Nayak.There are some artifacts hidden by archaeological excavations.It was part of the princely state of Travancore during the colonial period before Indian independence,During the formation of the new state of Kerala, four of the eight tehsils of Thiruvananthapuram district wwasseparated from the new district of Kanyakumari, and in 1956 they were made a part of the Madras Presidency under the recommendations of the Reorganization Commission of the States.The Presidency was later changed to Tamil Nadu and Kanyakumari today as one of the 32 districts of Tamil Nadu state.

There are several historical notions in the district and the state, which support the saints of the district like Vyasa, Agasti, Tokak Piyayar, Aavayyar and Thiruvalluvar. The district is also the birthplace of Ayavasi.

Kanyakumari Temple

Kanyakumari Temple or Kanyakumari Bhagvathiyamand Temple is the main attraction of Kanyakumari and is dedicated to Kanyakumari, the incarnation of Goddess Parvati.

Devi Kanyakumari is the president of Kanyakumari According to the legends, there was no marriage between Goddess Kanyakumari and Lord Shiva, which resulted in the Goddess determined to be a virgin.It is believed that rice and grains made for marriage were abandoned and they turned into stones. Grain-like stones can still be seen today.

There is a unique architectural style in the Kumari Amman temple of Kanyakumari which is a collection of architectural styles of different ages.Kumari Amman Temple was originally built in the 8th century by the kings of the Pandya dynasty.It was later rebuilt by Chol, Vijayanagara and Nayak rulers.

The Kumir Amman temple of Kanyakumari has three corridors and a holy place.A famous section of the temple is located in the outer corridor of the Navaratri Mandap temple.Navaratri Pavilion has been decorated with paintings and carvings which reflect the talent of the architecture of Kumari Amman temple.

In the holy place of the temple, the statue of the Goddess, which comes to the east, includes the 18th century temples in the Kumari Amman temple, which worship the footprints of the goddess Kanyakumari.

The main festival of Kumari Amman temple is the Car Festival and Navaratri Festival.The car festival is organized during Vaiket, ie May-June and Navaratri festivals are organized during September-October.



Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial

Swami Vivekananda Memorial is dedicated to Ramakrishna Mission’s founder Shri Ramkrishna Paramhansa’s disciple Swami Vivekananda.Vivekananda Memorial was built between 1963 and 1970 in red and blue granite.It is located on a rock island, situated at an altitude of about 17 meters from the sea level, which has an area of ​about 6 acres.

Vivekananda Memorial is located at a distance of 490 meters from the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the confluence of the Indian Ocean.In the year 70, the President of the Ramkrishna Mission, Swami VeerServerananda sanctified the Vivekananda rock memorial, and it was VV Opened to the public.Giri, the then President of India.Vivekananda Memorial consists of two main structures – Vivekananda Mandapam and Shreepad Mandapam.Shreepad Pavilade is situated on Shreepad Parai, an ancient holy place which is considered blessed by Goddess Kanyakumari.

It is believed that Swami Vivekananda floated Shreepad Parivar beyond the sea for deep meditation and knowledge.According to the legends, this Shreepad was at Parayada that Goddess Kanyakumari had meditated.Footprint on Shreepad but is considered as Goddess Kanyakumari.

Padamanabhapuram Palace

Padmanabhapuram Palace is one of the best palaces in India, which is a symbol of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the country which is around for many centuries.
