General information about Sabarmati Ashram

Sabarmati Ashram

Also known as Sabarmati Ashram Gandhi Ashram, Harijan Ashram, or Satyagraha Ashram, is located in Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad’s Ahmedabad city, on the banks of the Sabarmati River, near Ashram Road, four miles from Town Hall. It was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s house, which was commonly called Mahatma Gandhi, who lived there for about 12 years with his wife, Kasturba Gandhi.




It was on this basis that Gandhi led the Dandi March known as the Salt Satyagraha on March 12, 1930. Given this recognition of the significant impact that on March 1, India’s independence movement made the ashram a national monument.

Upasna Temple

Gandhi Museum

An important feature of the ashram is the Gandhi Museum, a museum was inaugurated on May 10, 1963 by Jawaharlal Nehru.

There are five units in it and the library, two photo galleries and an auditorium.

The museum has an exhibition on oil painting of eight organism-shaped colors and Gandhiji’s life ‘Marie Zindagi My Message’ and ‘Gandhiji in Ahmedabad’. A collection has also been established.




It collects 34,666 papers by Gandhiji’s manuscripts of his 8,633 articles, negative of 6,367 photographs, 134 reel of his writings, microfilm, 210 films on Gandhiji and freedom struggle. In the library, more than 30,000 books, 155 letters have been received by Gandhiji, in addition to coins, postal stamps and various such memoirs.

In this area, 24,000 square feet museum has 54 blocks of each ’20’ x 20 ‘each, a conference hall and an auditorium for watching films and videos. The Sangram also organizes the publication and sale of Gandhi literature.

All days, including Sundays and holidays, are open to visitors from 8.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

How to reach Sabarmati Ashram?

By airplane:

Ahmedabad is connected with regular flights from New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Bangalore, Nagpur. Indian Airlines, Air India, Jet Airways, Air Deccan, Spice Jet, Go Air and Kingfisher Airlines operate flights from Ahmedabad to various destinations in India. From Rail:

From Ahmedabad Junction, Sabarmati Ashram is about 6.9 km away. To reach the ashram from the station, you can take bus, taxi or auto rickshaw.

Parking and facilities in Sabarmati Ashram

Ahmedabad: From next week, road discipline, parking and driving on the Mount Carmel-Mithakhali section will be strictly enforced by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the traffic department. Officials said that it will be the first ‘non-tolerance zone’ of the city.

Parking boxes have been marked for a certain number of cars and two-wheelers and even the auto rickshaw has been asked to park in a specified location. The room size of this hotel is 8 feet x 8 feet. It’s a double bed + writing table + chair + closet. A person can not go into this cage.
