Shillong in India is the capital and hill station of Meghalaya, one of the smallest states in India. Also called “The Blocked Clouds”, it is the headquarters of the Eastern Khasi Hills District and is located at an average elevation of 4,908 feet above sea level, in which Shillong Peak is the highest place at 6,449 feet.

The capital of Meghalaya, is home to many waterfalls. The main reasons to travel to Shillong are exciting mountain peaks, crystal clear lakes, breathtaking beautiful golf courses, museums and zoos. Shillong Peak

Located at a distance of 10 km south of the main city, the Shillong peak is the highest point. It is the highest point of Shillong at the height of 6449 feet and 1965 meters above sea level. From here you can see a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas, its waterfall as well as the plains of Bangladesh. A binocular is available for tourists.

Shikhar is a major tourist attraction located just 10 km away from the city. This place also acts as a radar station for the Indian Air Force so that visitors have to submit their identity and get approval to enter the gate, which is in constant monitoring.



Elephant Falls

A popular tourist attraction near Elephant Falls is a combination of 3 rivers. One of the British officers saw it as a rock named elephant, designated as an elephant. This rock was later destroyed due to earthquake. Its second name was “Kheed Lai Pattang Khoshias”, a name given by the Khasi tribe, it means “three step waterfalls”.

Elephant Falls, originally called three step waterfalls, is located 12 km from the capital city. In three stages where water falls, it is named as three step waterfalls.

Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is a village in eastern Khasi hill district of Mawlynnong state of India. It is famous for its cleanliness and natural charm. In 2003, Mawlynnong was honored with the prestigious Tag of ‘Clean Village in Asia’ by Discover India Magazine.

Mawlynnong has located 90 km away from Shillong and very close to the India-Bangladesh border village 100 years old and here it is about 90 houses and this village is known for its cleanliness. They also do bamboo dustbin to collect garbage and use it later as fertilizer.

In addition to the most clean village, there is a border with the top of the high hills, and the garden is full of colorful flowers. The village offers many tourist attractions, such as the living root tree and the boulder balancing rock on another rock.



Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake is a reservoir located in the hill ranges of 15 kilometers from north of the Malayan area, which is commonly known as Barapani Lake. It was built by tying Umiam river in the early days of the 1960s. It is a man-made lake which covers an area of 221 square kilometers

Umiya literally translates in ‘water of tears’, according to legend, two sisters descend from heaven and during a visit a sister was lost, and the second sister had become so unhappy that when she reached Meghalaya, her tears Flowers are not closed. Eventually, his tears formed this lake.

By road

Lady Hydari Park

Hey, one of the most famous tourist spots in Shillong, is named after the name of the first husband of Assam’s husband. In this large park of Lady Hydari, there is a lovely mini zoo along with various types of flora, in which there are 73 species of birds and more than 100 reptiles.

This is the best park in the city with Ward Lake. A small museum inside the park is the main purpose of the museum to highlight the rich biodiversity of the state. You can see stuffed leopards, scalp of elephants, photographs of rare animals found in the state, and can also look at the dry skin of strangers trapped on the wall. The beautiful bed of the rose is the main attraction of the park. A special game area is also a part of the park.

Ward’s Lake

One of Shillong’s most popular attractions, Ward Lake is located in the heart of the city. This lake is also known as Pollock Lake or Nan-Pollock. This picnic spot is equally popular among local people, family holidays and honeymoon joints.

The name of this lake is named after Sir William Ward, Chief Minister of Assam, who started the scheme for the establishment of this lake. It was later built by Colonel Hopkins in 1894. There is a botanical garden near the lake of Ward which has many orchids with many flower species.

This waterfall looks like an eagle that has spread its branch, and thus got the name of ‘spread eagle waterfalls’. Located in East Khasi district, located 6 km away from the city. It grows near the summit and the three hills standing on the side fall with a spray of huge flow in the pool.



Geography of Shillong

Lewduh, also called Bar market, which is located earns a lot of popularity as one of the largest and oldest business centers in the northeast of India. One particular thing about this market is that most shopkeepers are women from local villages.
